Hello JC,
My son Joey and I are the co-owners of N505CC, based out of Boerne Stage Airfield, northwest of San Antonio. I've got about 300 glider flights so not high time but a couple thousand in fighters from long ago. (F4 Phantoms) I have a short story to share.
This summer 2008 was a very good soaring season in South Texas. With the PW-5 we usually have a bit of a struggle to get out of the bowl around Boerne and head south. There are landing slips about every 13 miles so if you can get the decision altitude you can certainly head south for a cross country. This July we had the second best day with thermals topping about 6000 AGL. With this chance to get out of the bowl, I headed south for a flight to Castroville (23NM) and then soared that local area for quite a while. On the way back, it began to overdevelop and by the time I was overhead San Geronimo airpark (10NM out from Boerne) it became hard to get sufficient altitude to make it back over the no-land area between the two runways. After struggling for a while, I landed at San Geronimo . It began to sprinkle so I got under the wing. In short time it began to rain and then began to hail and blow.(while I was on the cell phone to the tow pilot) I ended up hanging on to the wing from underneath with hands and feet, giving the ultralight crowd in the hanger a show while I wondered why I had never noticed there were no tie down points on the PW-5. Eventually I was able to get in the cockpit and fly the glider with full spoiler so it did not bang around on the ground. The tow pilot made it in between cells and we waited for a couple of hours, looking at the weather radar on my Blackberry. When it was clear between the two airfields and we confirmed no damage to the PW5, we towed on home to Boerne.
