We learn with great sadness that Piotr Sierputowski, who was instrumental in the development of the PW5 as part of the design team from Warsaw University Institute of Technology, died on July 31, after a multi-year struggle with cancer. Piotr was very active in support of the World Class. On several occasions, he represented the design Team from Warsaw University on the IGC-World Class Subcommittee meetings, and also attended WCSA annual meetings during the SSA Conventions. We will miss his enthusiasm, and will remember his many contributions to Soaring, glider design, and to the World Class in particular.
The following are some links to some of Dr. Piotr Sierputowski's work: Institute of Aeronautics and Applied Mechanics, Warsaw University of Technology Center of Excellence for Computational Fluid Dynamics Conference on "Mechanics in Aviation" |

A FEW WORDS ON THE WORLD CLASS SOARING ASSOCIATION The International Gliding Commission (IGC) created the World Class to provide a safe and affordable single-design glider to support one-design competitions with the ultimate aim of carrying our sport to the Olympics. After a multi-year and rigorous process, IGC selected the PW-5 as the official World-Class glider, thereby instituting the first FAI-approved monotype soaring class for international racing. Created by Warsaw University of Technology, the PW-5 features fiberglass construction, benign flight characteristics, 32.5 performance, and 13.5m wings. The university licenses the design to any company wanting to manufacture the PW-5. Manufacturers may not alter the geometry or weight of the aircraft. |
